7/8/2014 Toledo Mud Hens 3, Louisville Bats 4

Louisville Slugger Field, Louisville, KY
Game 3 of 4

STOP THE PRESSES! Today, for the first time this season, I can record a legitimate WIN in the Mystery Rookie Card game...hands down!
Not only that, but this could be the biggest WIN of all, since I started the game a few seasons ago!

One thing I'm seeing here this season that I haven't seen for a while is really good pitching. Tonight's originally scheduled starter was Tim Crabbe, but as Crabbe went on the DL yesterday, recent call-up Mikey O'Brien was pencilled in to start for the Bats against Derek Hankins...both pitchers I had never known of before tonight.
Tonight is 24-year-old O'Brien's AAA debut; he started the season in Pensacola, appearing in 17 games (9 of them starts) and owning a 3-3 record with a 3.86 ERA. He then was demoted to Bakersfield, for unknown reasons, and was 1-0 with a 6.23 ERA in 3 starts there. Cincinnati picked up O'Brien in the December 2013 Rule 5 Draft from the Yankees.

Toldeo's starter Derek Hankins is another story; he's just turned 30 and has spent time in the Pirates and Rangers organizations since 2004, prior to signing with the Tigers in 2013 (when he also spent some time with the mighty Doosan Bears of the KBO). Hankins, who hails from Effingham, IL, was pretty good with the Mud Hens last season (4-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 14 starts) but has seen his line slip a little this season, entering the game with a 4-9 record and a 5.93 ERA.

Fact of the matter is, both starters were excellent; both going at least 6IP and neither one allowing more than 2 runs. Neither pitcher was handed a decision tonight, as that trophy went to the bullpen. The damage to either team was minimal, but the game's outcome was decided during the 7th inning...one that saw the Mud Hens in the lead by 1 at the middle, and was met with a response by the Bats with 2 more runs scored. Neftali Soto's sac fly in that inning, against LHP Mike Belfiore in relief, ended up being the game-winning RBI.

SCOREKEEPER'S NOTE: While we're on the subject of the 7th inning, the first batter O'Brien faced was the legendary Mike Hessman, who reached on a throwing error by Soto. Later in the game, the Official Scorer reversed the call and ruled it a hit, but I was not about to change the ruling on my scoresheet.

I also got a second look at Donald Lutz this evening  Bloodied, yet unbowed, by his lack of #sparkle on June 14th I am hoping to see some #shine tonight...especially since Lutz has an 8-game hitting streak going on. Here, Lutz is facing Hankins.
Tonight, Lutz did see some action in left field, but ended his hitting streak at 8 games, with a sac fly RBI to his credit.

SCOREKEEPING PRO TIP: Of course, I'm trusting that all of you are always being sure that you're wearing sunscreen. That being said, when it's miserably HOT (as it was tonight), the sweat and sunscreen can add some misery to your scoresheet. We all know that sweat, sunscreen, and a little bit of rosin helps a pitcher with the grip on their ball; it's also true that sweat + sunscreen + paper = a medium that isn't fair to the application of graphite on paper (or ink, for that matter, if that's how YOU roll).
Everyone should have a small hand towel or dry washcloth in their Scorekeeper's Utility Belt. I can't handle life without mine, as it's great to keep the sweat out of your eyes and even better...to rest your sweaty, sunscreeny hands on and protect your scoresheets. It works!

Chihiro and I are all smiles this evening!! Go Tuesday Baseball! That means $1 Hot Dogs!!

The lede for this post proclaimed my joy in finally "winning" the Mystery Rookie Card game today. Where I was nearly despondent when my pal Marty pulled a Barry Bonds RC a month ago, this is my day to celebrate the same, victoriously.
There isn't a card in the 1986 Donruss set that looks quite this amazing. Regardless of what it's "worth," it's a keeper, and also a badge of sorts. I'll keep this card in my scoring clipboard for the rest of the season.

Chihiro's pick sported a familiar face on this 2006 Topps #230...yes, I remember that guy! It's Tim Corcoran!
Tim had a really good outing with the Gwinnett Braves when I saw him here early last season. He was a 44th round draft pick by the Mets in 1996, yet didn't make his MLB debut until 9 years later, as a Tampa Bay Devil Ray, and pitching for his 3rd organization. He only appeared in 40 games with the Rays from 2005-2007 (17 of them starts), and never appeared in an MLB game afterwards. He signed with the Florida Marlins later that year, then with the Dodgers (twice) in 2009, and again in 2012. He played in 16 games with the Delfines de Cuidad del Carmen of the Mexican League in 2012, and found himself in the Braves organization in 2013 at the age of 35 and isn't active this season.

BONUS CARDS: Sure, my wallet is hurting, but certainly not my pride. Bottom line, Matt (who runs the Slugger Monkey kiosk at LSF) is keeping to his word on my requests for Jose Altuve cards, and had quite a stack for me tonight. I couldn't pick them all up, but here's what I was able to take home with me:

The 2013 Bowman Chrome Jose Altuve Refractor #194 is numbered 60 out of 250. The 2014 Topps Heritage #28 is simply darling. The 2013 Topps #35 Refractor is also darling.

Here's a 2011 Bowman #11; the 2013 Bowman #108 is numbered 4 out of 500. Sweet!!

Last time I was at LSF, I challenged Matt to find some other Astros hits for me. Here are two Carlos Correa cards, what a stud!! 2013 Topps (Pro Debut) #4 and 2013 Bowman #BP100.

Game 1 of 2

Back to back dingers? Yes, please!

Think what you like about solo HRs (as I often do) but tonight, it was all the Bats had to offer against the Clippers...and all they needed to win.

6/4/12 Durham Bulls 2, Louisville Bats 1

Louisville Slugger Field, Louisville, KY
Game 4 of 4

Late afternoon rain showers may have delayed the start of the game, but only for 33 minutes…a 33-minute delay of another loss for the Bats. The game was well pitched by both teams, but the box score will only tell you that 24-year old Shane Dyer, recently called up from the AA Montgomery Biscuits, bested 30-year old Chad Reineke on behalf of the Durham Bulls.
Let’s face it, the Bats are so banged up right now with perennial lineup players Paul Janish, Chris Valaika, Denis Phipps, and even Daryl Jones all on the disabled list, manager David Bell has little other choice than to give more playing time to some old guys and some young guys we are less familiar with. Bring on the geezers, newly-signed Joey Gathright (last time I saw him in Louisville was in a 2009 game, playing for the visiting Norfolk Tides) and Willie Harris, in AAA Louisville after a 19-game .278 OPS run with the Reds.

Bell’s plan during this series seems to have been to give the starters an opportunity to build up higher pitch counts, and let the offense try to keep them in the game. Game 1 of the series saw Pedro Villareal face Lance Pendleton; Villareal stayed in for 5.2 innings, 3 ER and 106 pitches, left the game behind and earned an L as the Bats fell to the Bulls 3-1. Game 2 featured Sean Gallagher in for only 2.2 innings against Jim Paduch, 2 ER and 65 pitches; this was the shortest outing by a Bats starting pitcher during the series, the Bulls won 8-3. Game 3 was Jeff Francis’ gem of his 2012 season so far, a complete game shutout against Chris Archer; 114 pitches total, as the Bats’ offense backed him up with 7 runs.

Tonight, Bell left Chad Reineke in for 7 innings, 2 ER, 106 pitches. He only left with a 1-run deficit, but was (for the sake of pitching W-L record-keeping) out-dueled by Dyer, who was 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA prior to tonight’s outing. Dyer and Reineke were pretty much evenly matched, and Dyer left the game before Reineke did…but the Bats couldn’t get any more runs across the plate in support of Reineke, as they also failed to do for Villareal 3 days earlier. The Bats are holding on steadily and consistently to a W-L record of .300 or so, and are showing no signs of getting out of this pattern for the time being.

My point is this; Minor League teams aren’t focused on putting a plan together to win baseball games, they are more focused on key players working on specifics in an effort to help the Major League club determine what their next move is, with or without these players on board. I think most of us who follow baseball at this level understand this, but the casual fan is watching this team toss around listlessly at the bottom of the league and are understandably bewildered. Say what you like about the Reds’ minor league system but for this year, this is where it is now, at the AAA level. There are some flashes of hope in the lower levels (uh, Billy Hamilton) and even on this team, recent callups Villareal and Cody Puckett, along with late-2011 season AAA callup Neftali Soto. However, they and the rest of the AAA squad here and now are just plain having trouble handling opposing pitchers and supporting their own. You read a few weeks ago of my lamentations of Jeff Francis in this respect…only the Bulls and the Rochester Red Wings are scoring fewer runs than Louisville (by 5 and 18 respectively), but Louisville is allowing 40+ more runs than Rochester, tied with the Durham Bulls. This game found the Bats especially bereft of making anything on the basepaths happen at all; 24 total left on base (Kristopher Negron and Soto each stranded 4) and were 1-for-11 with RISP.

Winning isn’t the name of the game, though. Don’t try to explain this to the casual fan, because it doesn’t matter to them.

UPDATE: A day or so after his CG shut out victory, the Reds rewarded Francis by releasing him from the team.

In the mystery rookie card game, my wife picked Australian RHP Rich Thompson’s 2008 UD RC. Thompson started 2012 with the Angels, but is currently on the Sacramento River Cats roster (AAA affiliate of the Oakland A’s).

I picked a 2008 Bowman Collin Balester RC. Balester, a 4th round pick by the Expos in the 2004 draft, was traded to the Detroit Tigers for Ryan Perry in December 2011, has played 11 games for the Tigers in 2012, and is back on the Toledo Mud Hens roster as of 6/3/12. If he's still on their roster in early August, I'll probably try to get him to sign this card.

9/5/11 Indianapolis Indians 2, Louisville Bats 5

Louisville Slugger Field, Louisville, KY
Game 2 of 2
LAST GAME OF THE SEASON

2 trades after the fact and it’s obvious from this picture on the Pepsi Vision Jumbotron that Ryan Ludwick is STILL a Cardinal!

As if I wasn’t ‘grey’ already, knowing that the MiLB season is drawing to a close today, the weather had to up and remind me that Summer is truly and nearly dead. It was bloody hot yesterday, but today it was cool, overcast, almost drizzly, and a tad windy. Football weather, yes…baseball weather? SHEESH.

The whole family joined me for today’s game, as the Bats are set to finish 16 games or so behind the league-leading Columbus Clippers and not make a trip to the IL playoffs for the first time since 3 consecutive appearances. A win to end the season would be nice, but it is September 5th…which means: September 1st expanded roster call-ups by the Reds (who must believe they still have a chance…!?!) have depleted what was left of many of the Bats’ “major league ready” players on the roster and replaced them with a group of folks who will undoubtedly return in 2012 as ‘next year’s talent’…it’s great to see so many new faces, but the Indians are still playing well (3 games ahead of the Bats) and the question is, can the new guys eke one last “BATS WIN” on a day like this?

The answer was YES. And even with Ryan Ludwick on rehab assignment from the Pirates (parent club of the Indians). I squealed with joy when I saw his name on the lineup card, since he was a Cardinal I’ve enjoyed watching him play…now I get to see him here! UNRULY!!

Jeff Locke on the bump for the Indians…yeah, you already know about my Jeff Locke mancrush if you read this post. He struck out 6 (2 of those were against Mike “hard luck strike zone” Costanzo) and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits in 5 IP. Great stuff, mesmerizing smooth delivery. Ex-Cub Sean Gallagher (where did all that hair come from?!?) pitched 3 innings in relief for the Indians. Same ol’ Sean Gallagher, but with more hair.

The new guys (and some of the not-so-new guys) pulled it off, all Bats runs were driven in by Denis Phipps (only with the club for a month or so), Mike Costanzo (here since July), and newest call-up Neftali Soto, who nailed a shocking 2-run HR in the 1st inning…quite a statement.

I took quite a few pictures…rather than try to arrange them, since there are so many, here they are inning-by-inning.

After the game, my wife and Kei headed home while Chihiro and I waited outside the East entrance for baseball players. In the minor league tradition, on the last game of the season the players from both teams toss most of their non-lethal personal equipment (caps, batting gloves, etc) into the crowd. Chihiro wanted to head down to the dugout to get this, but we didn’t think it was a great idea. Lots of kids outside had some of this equipment for the players to sign. Chihiro decided to go for broke, and instead of waiting for one player to sign her baseball, she got everyone who came out from the Bats to do so, collecting about 10 signatures on her ball.

Ryan Ludwick darted out of the building, aggressively avoiding autograph seekers, and headed straight for a cab. My guess is he’s heading to the airport to return to Pittsburgh. However, the cab must not have been his cab, as he stood by the vehicle for a few minutes and did end up signing a few items for the kids.
